This weekend I started the opening scene of my WIP. I didn't get a ton of words written, but I feel as if I've put my toe into the first crack of the rock face.
The first line isn't great. I'm waiting for inspiration to dawn on a great, gripping, interesting, engaging first line. Since it hasn't come to me yet, I just went ahead and dove into the rest of the scene. For the first time, I breathed a little life into a setting. I made a name into a character, gave her something she wants, the reason she wants it, and what might keep her from getting it.
I love this process.
So, how about you? Where are you in the project you're working on?
Kudos on getting that opening down. I hope you have lots of fun with the story.
ReplyDeleteLast night a few things broke free in my head that hopefully will allow me to make my heroine more likable. She's kinda been snarky, and I need to soften her up. :)
DeleteHappy Creating!
ReplyDeleteThanks, lady!
DeleteOne of my favorite times--opening a novel.
ReplyDeleteRight now I'm in the pit. Halfway through of course. :D
~ Wendy
The pit! That's a great way to describe it! About halfway, I become convinced that it all stinks, nothing can be done with it, what was I thinking...
DeleteBut---I persevere! And I remind myself that I can clean it all up after I get it written. :)
Just finished my rough draft. Maybe tomorrow will crack it open and start editing (which I happen to enjoy, so yay!!)
ReplyDeleteHave fun with your new wip!
Yay for editing, where you get a chance to smooth out the bumps and polish the rough spots. :)
DeleteI'm with you. Just put my toe in on writing a new WIP! Here's to new works! Yay!
ReplyDeleteYay! Press on! We'll climb together!
DeleteThose opening scenes are fun. I wrote mine last week, wasn't super satisfied with it, but it worked. Now I'm going to make myself move on :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not completely enamored with my opening scene, but I'm telling myself I can always go back and clean it up. :D
DeleteSo many possibilities when you're at that stage! So fun. I haven't quite gotten there yet.
ReplyDeleteI'm always full of optimism at the outset. It's when I get into the middle of the story that I'm in the pit of despair! :)
DeleteIt's always exciting to start a new WIP. I'm working on rewrites of the old WIP. Maybe I'll get to start something new in November.
ReplyDeleteAre you doing NaNo? I wanted to, but I needed to get started on my story sooner. I'm going to have to shadow NaNo again this year.
DeleteI love the creative process! I'm in the middle of it...plotting away! Happy mountain climbing!! :)
ReplyDeleteYay for plotting! Do you work out a chapter by chapter or rough synopsis? Character sketches or interviews? I'm always interested in how other writers work.
DeleteWay to go, girlfriend. Enough plotting (coming from a confirmed panster), time to dip in the whole leg : ) I've come to the end of chapter 3 and my characters are still a bit stiff. So I'm writing short stories of their backgrounds. I finally feel their hearts beating...
ReplyDeleteYay for getting to know your characters. I finally got a line on my heroine last night. It feels so much better!
